Safe Kids Elkhart County is a member of a worldwide network of organizations working to prevent unintentional childhood injuries, the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 1 to 14.
Safe Kids Elkhart County is part of Safe Kids USA, the first and only U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing accidental childhood injuries.
Our local coalition was founded in 1991, with the Elkhart County Health Department serving as the lead organization. Together, volunteers, public health officials and generous community benefactors have increased awareness about the risks associated with unsafe actions and behaviors. We have been successful spreading the word so:
* Parents use proper child passenger safety restraints in vehicles
* Kids use helmets and pads while riding bikes
* Proper safety measures are taken in and around swimming pools
* Concussion symptoms can be identified more quickly on athletic fields
* Families develop emergency plans to stay safe during fires and storms
* Babies benefit from safe sleep choices made by parents
* Teens accept the responsibility of driving safely without impairment or distraction
